Singaporeans becoming silent streamers at work due to AI, a special report by Money FM 89.3 The Big Story featuring industry expert - Founder of The Gain Lab, Martin Li.

During my recent conversation on Money FM 89.3’s Money Matters with Hongbin Jeong, we explored a provocative and somewhat unsettling question: Is Singapore at risk of becoming a "human prop" in the age of AI?, We discussed the "silent streamer" phenomenon emerging from China, where AI clones take over entire e-commerce broadcasts, leaving human hosts to stand passively beside the screen,. While that broadcast highlighted the immediate shift in digital commerce, it opened a much larger dialogue about the professional survival of every Singaporean worker.

This article serves as a direct extension of that conversation. As the Founder of The Gain Lab, I want to bridge the gap between the technology we discussed on air and the Emotional Intelligence (EI) required to master it. If AI is taking over the "visible" and "scripted" parts of our roles, we must urgently define, and lean into, what remains uniquely human.

In the rapidly shifting landscape of the 2026 global economy, a unsettling phenomenon has emerged from the live-streaming hubs of China: AI clones are taking over entire broadcasts, leaving their human counterparts to stand as passive "props" on screen. The audience still hears the sales pitch and the message is delivered, but the human’s role has been relegated to a mere physical presence while the machine performs the core function. This "silent streamer" phenomenon is not merely a niche trend in e-commerce; it is a stark warning for the broader professional world as artificial intelligence becomes deeply integrated into our daily workflows.

As we navigate the future of work, the fundamental question facing every professional and leader today is no longer "Will AI take my job?" but rather: "Am I adding value that AI cannot replicate?". At The Gain Lab, we recognise that the answer to this question lies in the strategic cultivation of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and high-level human reasoning, the very attributes that prevent a professional from becoming a "human prop" in their own career.

The Subtle Erosion: Understanding "Job Hollowing"

Most professionals will not find themselves replaced by a robot overnight. Instead, the sources suggest we are facing a more insidious risk: job hollowing. This occurs when AI gradually absorbs the structured, predictable, and visible parts of a role.

Currently, AI is being utilised across industries to:

  • Draft first versions of reports and internal documents.

  • Summarise complex marketing analytics and campaign results.

  • Generate responses to routine customer enquiries.

  • Research market information and write product descriptions.

Because these tasks follow structured formats and predictable patterns, AI systems can reproduce them with incredible speed. As these tasks move from humans to machines, the worker remains in their role, but their actual contribution begins to shrink. If we allow ourselves to become merely the "editors" of machine-generated outputs without adding unique insight, we risk hollowing out our professional value until we are nothing more than a human face for an automated process.

The Human Moat: Context, Judgment, and Emotional Intelligence

To remain indispensable, professionals must pivot away from tasks defined by pattern recognition and toward those defined by context, reasoning, and creativity. While AI is extraordinarily efficient at execution, it lacks the nuanced Emotional Intelligence required to navigate the complexities of a real-world business environment.

The sources identify four critical pillars where human value remains supreme:

  1. Context: Understanding the unique, often unstated, "real-world" situations that surround a business problem. AI sees the data; humans see the culture, the history, and the subtle shifts in human relationships.

  2. Judgement: Deciding whether an AI-generated output actually makes sense within the current strategic framework. This involves questioning assumptions and identifying what might be missing from a machine's logic.

  3. Ethical Responsibility: Weighing the risks and consequences of a decision. AI can provide an answer, but it cannot bear the moral weight of the outcome.

  4. Creative Problem Solving: Identifying the right solution for a specific human need, rather than just the most statistically probable one.

Note: While the sources focus on these four pillars, as a content strategist, I would argue that at the heart of these lies Emotional Intelligence which is the ability to manage one's own emotions and navigate the social complexities of a workplace to drive these high-level outcomes.

Leading AI Strategically: From Experimentation to Mastery

Singapore’s Budget 2026 has provided a significant tailwind for this transition, offering six months of free premium AI access to help workers bridge the gap between tools and skills. However, having access to the tool is not the same as having the skill to lead it. The challenge for today’s professional is learning to lead AI ethically and strategically.

Effective AI integration requires a shift in mindset. Instead of letting the AI think for you, you must learn to guide it. This starts with a critical self-audit: What part of my work consumes the most time?. By offloading time-consuming, routine tasks like data analysis or initial drafting to AI, professionals "gain" the capacity to focus on higher-value activities.

The goal is to move from execution (which AI can do) to strategy and oversight. A high-value professional in 2026 is one who asks:

  • "What assumptions did the AI make in this report?".

  • "Does this recommendation reflect the real-time nuances of our client's needs?".

  • "How can I use this AI-generated data to craft a more empathetic and effective human-centric strategy?"

The Gain Lab Perspective: The Future is "AI-Ready"

The most valuable professionals of the future will not be those who avoid AI, but those who master the art of working with it. This requires a commitment to "AI-ready behaviours"—a blend of technical literacy and enhanced soft skills.

As the retirement age in Singapore rises and the workforce becomes more digitally integrated, the pressure to upskill is universal, affecting everyone from new hires to seniors. The hiring market in 2026 is increasingly competitive, with employers looking for candidates who can demonstrate that they provide value beyond what a machine can generate in minutes.

At The Gain Lab, we believe that "gaining" an edge in this era requires three strategic actions:

  • Audit Your Routine: Identify the "predictable patterns" in your job that are ripe for automation.

  • Double Down on EI: Invest in the human-centric skills of negotiation, communication, and change management. These are the areas where AI cannot compete.

  • Practice Active Oversight: Never accept an AI output at face value. Apply judgement and context to every machine-generated task to ensure it meets the standard of "uniquely human" value.

Conclusion: Reclaiming the Narrative

The rise of the "human prop" is a choice, not an inevitability. While AI can simulate the "visible" parts of our work, the emails, the reports, the presentations, it cannot simulate the soul of leadership.

The critical question remains: Am I adding value AI cannot replicate?. By leaning into our capacity for context, reasoning, and emotional intelligence, we do more than just "save" our jobs; we elevate them. We move from being passive observers of technology to being the strategic architects of a new, AI-augmented future of work.

In the age of AI, the most important "gain" is not the speed of our output, but the depth of our insight. Don't be a prop in the machine's story; be the director of your own.
