One night a few years ago, I was sitting at the void deck of my neighbourhood with a friend. We both had hit a low point in our careers at that point and met up for a chat. We worked in totally different industries and had very different job roles. Our situations were different but the impact was nearly career ending for both of us. We eventually moved forward in our careers after that night.
I recount this story to highlight the point that career roadblocks can happen to a lot of us at different points in our careers. Whether you are stuck in a role that no longer excites you, drowning in work-life imbalance, or paralysed by the fear of change, career roadblocks are universal. The good news is that they’re not dead-ends. They are simply detours waiting for your creativity and courage.
Feeling LOST just means that you are “Looking Out, Seeking Transformation”. In this article, I will unpack five common challenges and turn them into stepping stones.
Career Roadblock #1 - Feeling Stuck in a Rut: “I’m Just Going Through the Motions”
The image that comes to mind is you running on the treadmill, lots of motion but not moving forward. You probably have been with the company in the same role for a while now and you think you have mastered the role. Requests for new projects or promotions were met with vague promises. In summary, you feel invisible, unmotivated, and worst of all…STUCK.
Why It Happens?
Comfort zones are cozy, but they rarely lead to growth. Feeling stuck often stems from a lack of clarity (no clear goals), stagnation (no new challenges), or feeling undervalued (no recognition).
Actionable Steps
• Set SMART Goals: Most of the time, people do not get promoted for just doing their job. Instead of saying “I want a promotion,” try, “I’ll lead one cross-departmental project by Q3 to showcase leadership skills.”
• Seek Feedback: Ask your manager, “What skills should I develop to contribute more effectively?”
• Explore Internally: Explore other roles that you are interested in within the companyand propose a lateral move.
Career Roadblock #2 -The Skill Gap Dilemma: “I’m Not Qualified for the Next Step”
Have you ever looked at a job opportunity and thought to yourself how nice it would be if you could get the role. However, almost instantaneously, your mind kicks into overdrive with all the reasons of why “They’ll never pick me”, like lack of certifications, experience, etc.
Why It Happens?
Rapid industry changes and imposter syndrome can make even talented professionals doubt their readiness.
Actionable Steps
• Upskill Strategically: Identify specific skillsets that are critical for the new role and actively seek out short courses that can help to fil this skill gap. If is an online self- paced course, make sure to schedule your learning hours in your calendar. Remember: What gets scheduled, gets done.
• Find a Mentor: Connect with someone in your target role to help you gain insider insights on what the new role is like and what it really takes to do the job.
• Learn by Doing: Volunteer for projects that stretch your skills related to the target role and gain some hands-on experience.
Career Roadblock #3 - Work-Life Imbalance: “I’m Burning Out”
Burn-out is unfortunately becoming common in the workplace. The World Health Organization defines burn-out as unmanaged, chronic workplace stress that includes [1]:
• feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;
• increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and
• reduced professional efficacy.
Why It Happens?
Boundary-blurring cultures and the “hustle mentality” glorify overwork, but burn-out is detrimental to both your productivity and health. This phenomenon is probably exasperated by the remote work arrangements post COVID-19, making it harder to draw the lines between work and personal life.
Actionable Steps
• Set Non-Negotiables: Intentionally block out segments of time for your care-abouts like “family”, “friends”, “hobbies”, etc and turning off work notifications during that time.
• Delegate or Automate: Take a hard look at your calendar and ask yourself a few questions:
o Do you really need to be in all the meetings?
o Are there meetings/tasks that could be combined or eliminated?
o Can you delegate tasks that don’t require your expertise?
o Are there any ways to automate repetitive tasks?
• Practice Micro-Recovery: A 10-minute walk or meditation session between meetings can help to reset your energy.
Career Roadblock #4 - Fear of Change: “What If I Regret Leaving?”
Ever wanted to pivot to something new but held back because you fear losing the stability that your current job provides. Instead, you stayed where you are, thinking you have no other choice and growing more resentful by the day.
Why It Happens?
Our brains are wired to prioritise safety over risk, even when the status quo is unfulfilling.
Actionable Steps
• Start Small: Starting a side hustle in the new area of interest is a great way to test the waters without quitting your job.
• Reframe Fear as Excitement: Both emotions feel physiologically similar, so say to yourself, “I’m excited to grow!”
• Build a Safety Net: Save 3–6 months of expenses or secure freelance work before leaping.
Career Roadblock #5 - Networking Nerves: “I Hate Small Talk”
Are you an introverted professional who have always avoided networking scenarios at work or conferences. You feel awkward and often are at a loss of words when being “forced” to engage.
Why It Happens?
Networking feels transactional if you focus on “what can I get?” instead of building genuine connections.
Actionable Steps
• Quality Over Quantity: The hardest hurdle to overcome is starting the conversation.Focus on 1–2 meaningful conversations per event. Ask questions and engage in active listening.
• Leverage LinkedIn: Share insights on posts or comment thoughtfully. Virtual networking is low-pressure.
• Follow Up: Send a personalised note post-event, like, “Your project on AI ethics fascinated me, let’s chat more!”
